As businesses work towards becoming more energy-efficient and environmentally responsible, the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) plays a vital role in driving positive change.
What is the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme?
Established by the UK government, the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme is a mandatory energy assessment scheme designed to help large organisations identify ways in which they can reduce their energy usage, benefiting both the environment and the business. Under the scheme, qualifying companies must:
-
Carry out an energy audit every four years.
-
Identify cost-effective energy-saving opportunities.
-
Submit a compliance report to the Enviroment Agency.
What Does an ESOS Assessment Involve?
The ESOS assessment procedure can broadly be broken down into several key stages:
-
Measure your total energy consumption.
-
Identify areas of significant consumption.
-
Consider all the available routes to compliance.
-
Appoint a lead assessor.
-
Review and sign off the assessment.
-
Submit the assessment to the ESOS online register.
While ESOS assessments are mandatory, implementing the recommended energy-saving measures is not. However, organisations that choose to act on these recommendations can benefit greatly through reduced costs and improved sustainability.
Action Plans for ESOS Compliance
With the submission of Phase 3 compliance notifications now mostly complete (an extension was announced for Phase 3 plans to be submitted by March 2025), focus has shifted to the next step: the follow on ESOS Action Plan. These action plans will be available for public reading and should outline your planned measures to reduce emissions, when you intend to do this, the expected energy savings and how these savings were calculated - indicating whether they were identified during the ESOS assessment.
The purpose of these plans is to demonstrate the actions companies intend to take before the next ESOS submission in 2027. The recorded actions should be realistic and recorded with the intent to carry them out. The Action Plan will need updating annually every December until the next ESOS compliance date in December 2027.
