No two days are ever the same for our Business Development Manager.
Business Development Managers (BDMs) play a critical role in driving growth and expanding opportunities for their organisations, but what does a typical day look like for someone in this role? We spoke with Callum, our experienced BDM based in Ormskirk, to get his perspective.
Can you briefly describe your role and responsibilities as a Business Development Manager?
“As a BDM at Green Zone Surveys, my focus is on securing new business while nurturing existing relationships, turning these connections into something even greater. It’s about creating good rapport and solid trust with people.”
What’s the first thing you do when you get to the office on a morning?
“When I get to the office, I like to make a coffee and pour a glass of water, put my dinner in the fridge, tell my Alexa to play some Sam Fender and that sets me up for the day.”
What does an average day look like for you?
“An average day for me doesn’t exist! Some days I’ll choose to focus on generating new business, where I am more proactive. On other days I may come across a lot of work that needs to be completed, which could involve researching potential targets for the next focus.”
What skills do you think are essential for someone in business development to succeed?
“You need to be self-motivated, hungry and creative. It’s hard out there so it’s important to find your own niche.”
What are some common challenges you face in your role and how do you overcome them?
“Most of my objections and questions tend to revolve around understanding what a TM44 is, so it usually involves explaining that and building from there.”
What’s one thing you always try to fit into your day to stay productive?
“Prospecting! It’s so important to continue building that pipeline, even when you’re ahead. Remember, the work you put in now will be worth it down the line. Never become complacent.”
Have you learned anything new since joining Green Zone Surveys?
“Since joining Green Zone Surveys, I’ve deepened my knowledge of building compliance and industry regulations, particularly around Commercial EPCs, DECs, and TM44 inspections. I’ve gained insights into delivering efficient, client-focused compliance and energy solutions.”
What do you enjoy the most about working for Green Zone Surveys?
“The freedom and trust to succeed have been invaluable. I’ve been provided with all the tools and support I could possibly need, and the trust placed in me to start my own office and treat it like my own business has been incredible.”
